In a world of infinite choices and constantly changing trends, it can be hard to feel totally confident in the decisions we make. Did I miss out on the better pasta dish at dinner? Is that color couch the right centerpiece for the room? What if I end up hating my new job?
We experience decision fatigue regularly because we’re constantly bombarded with new ideas, concepts, and choices (thanks, social media!). And if we choose the thing that not as many people do, are we in the wrong?
I am someone who personally has always liked to find moments and items that fit a vision I already have. To have fewer choices to narrow down so I have conviction in my decisions. Life can feel a lot like Forever21 (RIP), and I regularly felt like having panic attacks in those stores.
I was put at ease speaking with this week’s guests all because of this notion. And yes, I did have some nerves recognizing I was sitting down with two luminaries of the food world: Rita Sodi & Jody Williams. They couldn’t be nicer and more down to earth!
I met Jody and Rita very quickly after they had been the keynote speakers at this year’s Cherry Bombe Jubilee at the elevators as we all left an inspiring day. Their meet cute is out of a Nancy Meyers movie: they fell in love over the beauty and simplicity of Rita’s asparagus dishes at I Sodi, and the world has subsequently fallen in love with their work over the last two decades because they stay true to what works for them.
As Jody says, whenever they’re working and thinking of what to do next, they step back and ask themselves how they feel. What do they need? What do they like and want?
They are the OG West Village gals, and not what you think from your Instagram feeds these days. They just stay true to what they like, who they are, and what they’re excited to do next.
Keep that in mind the next time you’re making an important decision. Tune out the noise and ask yourself: How does it make you feel?
